A copy of the original and two transcriptions, one typed the other handwritten, of the June 14, 1863 Civil War letter by Dr. John A. Scudder (1832-1896) to his wife, Helen "Het" S. (Van Trees) Scudder (1839-1922) in Washington, Indiana. Dr. Scudder was the Assistant Surgeon with the 65th Indiana Infantry Regiment that was stationed in Madisonville, Kentucky on the Ohio River when this letter was written. Company I of the 65th Regiment consisted of men primarily from Daviess County, Indiana. In this letter Dr. Scudder talks about the Union siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi. This is one item of a large collection donated by Patricia (Phillippe) Champion of photos, books, documents, letters, obituaries, death and birth documents, newspapers and deeds. |
