March 2, 1889 edition of "The St. Louis Republic" newspaper published in St. Louis, Missouri with an article on page 13 about Washington, Indiana ("A Town On A Boom"). The article chronicles the dramatic growth in Washington since the construction of the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad shops on the west side of the city. The article declared, "The present boom is of a lasting character--founded upon the honest resources and advantages of a highly favored land." This newspaper was part of a large collection of photos and records donated to the Daviess County Museum in 2012 from St. Simon Catholic Church in Washington. The construction of St. Simon Catholic Church was completed in 1886. In 2008 the church was renamed Our Lady of Hope after the merger of St. Simon and St. Mary, the two Catholic parishes in Washington. |
