July 19, 1863 letter from 26 year old Private Joseph E. Morris (1837-1909) to his parents in Jennings County, Indiana. He was serving with Company E of the 82nd Indiana Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 3rd Division of 14th Corps in the Union Army during the Civil War. His regiment was stationed at Winchester, Tennessee. He writes he is the "head clerk" in the 3rd Division's Adjutant General's Office. He also says he soon expects his regiment to receive four months back pay. After the war Joseph E. Morris married Martha Emaline (Haynes) Morris (1837-1919) in 1866 and they had one child who survived to adulthood, William Haynes "Willie" Morris (1868-1908). In 1902 Joseph E. Morris purchased a 340 acre farm in Daviess County, Indiana on Edwardsport Road just north of Washington. Also included is a handwritten transcript of the July 19, 1863 letter. These items were part of a large collection donated in 2025 to the Daviess County Museum by John Steinhart, the 3x maternal great grandson of Joseph & Martha Morris. |
