Scope & Content |
Copy of an undated typewritten history (ca. 1925-1930) of the Cabel family compiled by an unknown person. The history begins with Joseph Cabel born May 17, 1793, the son of Pierre Cable and Marie Eve (Graf) Cabel. The Cabel family immigrated to the United States in 1839. Joseph Cabel's oldest child was Joseph M. Cabel (1817-1901) who traveled by steamboat from New Orleans to Evansville, Indiana. From Evansville he walked to Washington, Indiana. In 1852 he and George Kauffman, Jr. established the firm of Cabel & Kauffman that became a prominent mercantile and grocery business on Main Street in Washington. The history is typed on business stationery of "Cabel's/Successor to Cabel & Kauffman Mercantile Co." The Cabel & Kauffman Mercantile buildings were at the southeast corner of N.E. 2nd and Main Street and were destroyed by fire on April 27, 1923. The company ceased to exist after the devastating fire. This suggests the family history was prepared circa 1925-1930. |
