Scope & Content |
Part of a page from an undated and unidentified newspaper clipping (ca. 1890-1900) likely taken from an edition of The Washington Gazette, the Republican newspaper in Washington, Indiana. One side is part of the editorial page in which Democrat officeholders and The Democrat newspaper are harshly criticized. The other side of the page are advertisements for several businesses in Washington and one from Petersburg. Ezra Mattingly became editor of The Washington Gazette in 1886. He was an attorney and became chairman of the Daviess County Republican party in 1892. Samuel Taylor, a prominent attorney in Washington who was aligned with the Democrat party, was mocked as "the fine-haired kid-gloved aristocrat, dangling a gold-headed cane." |
