October 14, 1914 edition of "The Progressive Bulletin" newspaper published in Washington, Indiana. It was a weekly newspaper issued by the Daviess County Progressive Central Committee. The Progressive Party (also known as the Bull Moose Party) was organized in 1912 when former President Theodore Roosevelt lost the Republican Party presidential nomination to President Howard Taft. Teddy Roosevelt ran for president in the 1912 general election on the Progressive Party ticket against Taft and Woodrow Wilson, the Democrat nominee. Most historians agree that Teddy Roosevelt's 1912 third-party campaign cost Taft a significant number of votes and resulted in Wilson's election as president. In the 1914 election, the following men were running Daviess County offices on the Progressive Party ticket: Frank E. Gilkison, Prosecutor; George E. Hopkins, State Representative; William C. Camp, Auditor; Charles Sims, Daviess County Clerk; Jonathan Allen, Daviess County Treasurer; Fred DeBolt, Daviess County Sheriff; Harry Van Trees, Daviess County Recorder. This 1914 newspaper is part of the Matthew Brett collection donated to the Daviess County Museum in 2023 by Claire (Cabel) Records. |
