Copy of a transcript of the Civil War diary of John Michael Tomey (1834-1919) who was in Company G of the 27th Indiana Infantry Regiment in the Union Army. Page 19 is missing. The diary dates from January 1, 1964 to September 15, 1864. John M. Tomey mustered in August 19, 1861 and was discharged September 13, 1864. His unit fought in some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War: Front Royal, Winchester, Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. The diary was written when the 27th Indiana was assigned to General William T. Sherman's army that was assigned the task of capturing Atlanta, Georgia. The 27th Indiana during the march to Atlanta engaged in several battles at Resaca, Cassville, Kenesaw, Lost Mountain, Peach Tree Creek and the siege of Atlanta. The transcript was prepared by L'lora C. McDaniel of Martinsville, Indiana. It was copied from a microfilm at the Morgan Public Library in Martinsville, Indiana. This diary was part of a large collection donated to the Daviess County Museum in 2025 by Leland Arthur "Art" Tomey. Included in this collection is a 2025 Find a Grave report about John Michael Tomey. |
