A copy of an undated article (ca. 1939) published in "The Washington Democrat" about 75 year old Emery Lett (1864-1950) of Washington, Indiana reminiscing when Frank James (1843-1915), the brother of Jesse James, his wife and three year old son in 1879 stayed six weeks at the home of Hamilton and Aurilla Lett, the parents of Emery Lett, on Petersburg Road five miles south of Washington in Veale Township. According to Emery Lett, Frank James introduced himself as James Clark and asked for lodging at the Lett home. When the James family left he paid for his families' room and board. Sometime later a letter arrived from Mr. James' wife and she told the Lett family her husband's name was Frank James, the brother of Jesse James. |
