Part of the front page of the November 5, 2003 Washington Times-Herald newspaper about the results of the municipal elections in Washington, Indiana. David Abel, a Republican, defeated the incumbent, Tom Baumert, a Democrat, in the mayoral race. Abel was previously Mayor of Washington from 1984 through 1987. Baumert defeated Abel in the 1987 election and served four consecutive terms as Mayor. The Republicans won the two other 2003 contested races: Elaine Wellman was elected Clerk-Treasurer of Washington and Jim Jones defeated Jim Steimel for the Washington Council-At-Large seat. |
