The biography of Charles B. "Chuck" Harmon (1924-2019), a native of Washington, Indiana. He graduated from Washington High School in 1942. He was an outstanding athlete and lettered in several sports in high school. He was on the Hatchet varsity basketball team that won back-to-back Indiana State Basketball Championships in 1941 and 1942. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and graduating from the University of Toledo in 1949, he was the first African-American to play major league baseball for the Cincinnati Reds (1954-1956). He also played for the St. Louis Cardinals (1956-1957) and the Philadelphia Phillies (1957). |
